Welcome to the fried rice recipe you didn’t know you were craving. When bacon, sesame and sweet soy come together, something happens that you’ll agree is totally lip-smacking. It’s nicely balanced with tender-crisp Asian veggies for an abundant midweek meal.

  • 1 Garlic clove
  • 1 Scallion
  • 100g String peas (sugar snap peas or snow peas)
  • 160g Jasmine rice
  • 150g Edamame (or green peas)
  • 45ml Sweet soy sauce
  • 15ml Toasted sesame oil
  • 9g Black & white sesame seeds

Preparation

Cook the rice

  • In a medium pot, combine the rice, 1 ½ cups water (double for 4 portions) and a big pinch of salt; bring to a boil.

  • Reduce the heat, cover and simmer, 14 to 16 min., until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.

  • Remove from the heat and let sit, covered, for 5 min. Fluff the rice.

Mise en place

  • Meanwhile, remove the stem ends of the string peas; cut crosswise into thirds.

  • Mince the garlic.

  • Thinly slice the scallion crosswise.

  • Roughly chop the bacon.

Cook the bacon & vegetables

  • In a large pan, heat a drizzle of oil on medium-high.

  • Add the bacon* and cook, stirring occasionally, 4 to 5 min., until beginning to brown. Remove ½ the drippings from the pan.

  • Add the string peas, edamame and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, 2 to 3 min., until the bacon is golden and the vegetables are crisp-tender.

Make the fried rice

  • Increase the pan to high and add the rice, sesame oil and 1 egg (double for 4 portions).

  • Sauté, breaking up any clumps and scrambling the egg, 1 to 2 min., until combined and cooked through.

  • Cook, pressing down, 2 to 3 min., until the rice begins to crisp.

  • Add the soy sauce and S&P; stir well.

Plate your dish

  • Divide the fried rice between your plates.

  • Garnish with the sesame seeds and scallion. Bon appétit!
